First Natural Gas-Powered Containerships Begin Construction

On Monday, February 24, 2014 a steel cutting ceremony was held at NASSCO Shipyard in San Diego, commencing the construction of TOTE Inc.’s new Marlin-class containerships, the first ever to be powered by natural gas. The steel cutting ceremony marks the start of construction on hull no. 495, the first LNG containership in the world.

The ships are scheduled to be delivered in late 2015 and early 2016, and will operate between Jacksonville, FL and Puerto Rico.
