VMA: Twice as much education in 2011
Attendees to VMA's previous Valves & Actuators 101 seminars have rated the sessions highly, but one common theme emerged when we asked for suggestions on how to improve the program: "Please have some actual products for us to examine during the training session." VMA's Education & Training Committee agreed and some changes are in store for 2011. Expanding the event to two full days will allow time for attendees to go to product stations displaying a variety of valves and actuators. Students will be able to see and touch many of the products discussed in the sessions, and the presenters will be on hand to explain how each product works.
A second day will also allow for an expanded lesson on a complex subject -- control valves and systems -- as well as an interactive afternoon session where attendees will gain real-world experience by helping to select the appropriate products for several different types of projects.
In 2011, the Valve Basics Seminar & Exhibit will be held June 6-7 in Calgary, Alberta, and Oct. 26-27 in the Chicago area. Registration for the June event and program details will be posted on VMA.org in late January or early February. For more information, go to VMA.org > Events > Valve Basics Seminar, or contact

VALVE MAGAZINE: Rating your valves
In the Winter 2011 issue of Valve Magazine, watch for contributing editor Greg Johnson's "Back to Basics" article on valve pressure ratings. Because there are so many different valves and industry sectors, there is more than just one rating system. In the refining, petrochemical, chemical and power industries, for instance, the class rating is by far the most common. But all rating systems serve a niche, so it is a good idea to become familiar with those that are used in your particular industry.
Also in the winter issue, scheduled to mail on Jan. 21: Valves in the Food & Beverage Industry, Tracking Valves with RFID Tagging, Predictive Diagnostics, A Primer on Scotch Yoke Actuators, HIC Testing, Repairing Sleeved Plug Valves and more.

ON THE WEB: Valve World Expo 2011
All in all, the Valve World 2010 Expo was a pretty good show, according to a number of VMA members who attended the event, held Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in Dusseldorf, Germany. On the plus side: the new, larger facility. On the negative side: members would like to have seen more end-users. Read the entire article at ValveMagazine.com, including details about the new Valve World Americas Expo announced for next year.
