BP Plc is trying to install a valve to stanch one of three leaks in an undersea Gulf of Mexico well as it works on longer-term solutions, including installing a dome to capture the flow and drilling a relief well to plug it.
An oily sheen from the leak reached the Louisiana shore today in the area of the Chandeleur Islands, a group of barrier islands about 70 miles east of New Orleans, said Matthew Schofield, spokesman for the U.S. Coast Guard. The sheen was confirmed at 4 a.m. local time, he said.
