PG&E officials were grilled Tuesday about the lack of automatic shutoff valves in much of their natural gas pipeline system, as a three-day hearing into the San Bruno explosion began at the National Transportation Safety Board.
Federal investigators cited a 2006 memo by a senior PG&E engineer that said remote controlled or automatic shutoff valves would have "little or no effect on increasing human safety or protecting properties."
