Steep Steel: Manufacturers Battling High Costs for Many Raw Materials

Blame it on a better economy, but manufacturers -- both locally and nationally -- are facing steep price increases for steel, copper and other raw materials.

"This is very typical, especially for steel," said Peter Hoeft, president of Eau Claire-based Hoeft Builders, which serves the commercial, industrial and other sectors. "There are very few steel manufacturers domestically, and they can set prices as demand dictates."
