A battle is heating up over a proposed natural-gas pipeline that would run through New Jersey and Staten Island before winding up in Manhattan.
Spectra Energy Corp., a Houston-based natural-gas company, wants to build 16 miles of new pipeline under Bayonne and Jersey City, N.J., Staten Island's North Shore and the Meatpacking District. It would also replace about five miles of existing pipeline that runs from Linden, N.J., to Staten Island.
