VALVE MAGAZINE PREVIEW: Economic picture’s not as grim as media portrays
The downfall in the stock market that occurred just as VMA’s annual Market Outlook Workshop, held Aug. 11-12 in Boston, was about to begin was only the pin that "burst the bubble” of the miraculous exuberance the market experienced in the previous months, according to Alan Beaulieu, president of the Institute for Trend Research. What’s more, the potential negative consequences have been “way overplayed” in the media, he said.
His remarks were met with some relief on the part of the audience. Those attendees were further soothed when Beaulieu said his original forecast that “both the global and U.S. economies are going to see recovery continue in 2012 and 2013 before we hit the next recession” were still on track, and that “this will be a good time to invest.”
Valve Magazine’s fall issue will feature a comprehensive market outlook for the coming year, with highlights from numerous industry experts who discussed various aspects of the economy and the major markets in which valves are used. In addition, go to ValveMagazine.com for additional reports from the workshop, which will be posted periodically over the next month.

ASSOCIATION NEWS: Early registration strong for Chicago area Valve Basics Seminar
At the Embassy Suites O’Hare-Rosemont in suburban Chicago, Oct. 26-27, more than 120 attendees are expected to be on hand for VMA’s Valves & Actuators 101 course. The one-and-a-half day seminar includes 10 hours of instruction, a “Valve Petting Zoo,” an interactive session on what valves and actuators to specify in a variety of applications, and tabletop exhibits that will allow attendees to view and ask specific questions about a variety of products. Participants also receive a comprehensive manual with color copies of slides plus lecture notes.
This course is expected to fill up, says VMA's

. “Because we want to break up into small groups for the petting zoo—which encourages interaction between the participants and the instructors—we’re limiting attendance to 140, and 20 of those spaces are reserved for local mechanical engineering students.”
Word of mouth, a central location in the U.S. and a growing recognition of the need to learn valve and actuator fundamentals all appear to be factors in the large number of early registrants. “We’re encouraging folks to sign up now. There may not be any space available for those who wait until just a few weeks before the event,” she adds.
For those unable to attend the Chicago event, next year the Valves & Actuators 101 course will be held in Houston, March 6-7, and in Denver, Oct. 10-11.
