Éléctricité de France, the power giant, has agreed to buy a rival, British Energy, for £12.5 billion, ($23.18 billion), the companies confirmed Wednesday, in a deal that would give the French company a dominant role in the British nuclear power industry.

Éléctricité de France raised its offer to £7.74 a share, according to a statement, from an initial £7.65 tendered in July.
