ASSOCIATION NEWS: 'Valve Petting Zoo' Receives Top Ratings at Basics Seminar in Calgary
More than 60 end-users, distributors, valve manufacturers and mechanical engineering students gathered on the campus of the University of Calgary June 6 and 7 for VMA’s Valves & Actuators 101 course as well as to view tabletop exhibits of valves, actuators and related products. VMA held its first "valve petting zoo," an event that encouraged attendees to examine a variety of valves and actuators. Each group that visited the zoo spent 15 minutes with each of seven presenters knowledgeable about particular product types such as multi-turn valves; check valves; quarter-turn valves; pressure relief valves; actuators—pneumatic and hydraulic; actuators—electric; and control valves and systems. One young engineer, a year out of school, joked: "You mean a valve isn’t just the bow-tie shape found on P&IDs? Who knew?"
Among attendees were 13 advanced-level mechanical engineering students from the University of Calgary, who were an enthusiastic addition to the mix. Their registration fees were funded under a scholarship program from VMA’s educational foundation, the Friends of the Crawford Library, Inc.
REGISTRATION FOR THE NEXT VALVE BASICS SEMINAR & EXHIBITS, Oct. 26-27 at the Embassy Suites Chicago-O'Hare, Rosemont, IL, will open on VMA.org by July 1. For more information, contact Judy Tibbs.
VALVE MAGAZINE PREVIEW: Extreme Testing
Gone forever are the days when testing valves meant filling them up with water, adding pressure and looking for leaks. Valves and actuators face increasing challenges in the field from higher pressures and temperatures to extreme cold and special service applications. That means that the people responsible for specifying and choosing the products are demanding more rigorous, diversified ways to test. The summer issue of Valve Magazine addresses “Extreme Valve Testing.”
The issue also offers a Back to Basics article on solenoid valves. Often considered as accessories, these valves are critical in the applications where they are used. And watch for articles on hydraulic actuators as well as some of the technology tools that valve and actuator companies use to draw people to their websites.
