Launched last week, the AM Forward initiative is designed to promote 3D printing’s uptake by small and midsize manufacturers as a means of helping better secure their supply chains, and revitalizing the U.S. manufacturing sector. Initial participants include industry giants like GE AviationHoneywellLockheed MartinRaytheon and Siemens Energy, while its 3D printing-focus has also drawn praise from stalwarts such as Carbon

“We’re at an undeniable inflection point — bringing digital manufacturing to U.S. businesses will be a critical component to the success of the American economy both now and into the future,” said Carbon CEO Ellen Kullman. “The administration’s acknowledgment of 3D printing to boost the economy is a solid step forward and a proof point that digital manufacturing is critical in addressing our ongoing supply chain challenges and beyond.”

Biden emphasized how the pandemic and the war in Ukraine has exposed the vulnerabilities of relying on overseas supply chains. Disruptions in these supply networks, the president said, have factored into higher prices for goods that hurt American pocketbooks every day.

“We know that one of the best ways to fight inflation is to strengthen the resilience of our supply chains,” Biden said. “That includes making more things here in America.”

The White House initiative also strengthens the role of organizations such as Youngstown-based America Makes, the first advanced manufacturing hub in the Manufacturing USA network.

“3D printing technology is incredible,” Biden said. “It can reduce parts lead times by as much as 90%, slash material costs and cut energy use in half.”
