An Alternative Basics Course: Valve Ed Comes to You!

The first-ever company specific Valve Basics program was presented this week to mechanical engineers from the ExxonMobil Baton Rouge Refining, and because of its success, VMA is extending the offer to other companies. Seasoned Valve Ed presenters taught 36 engineers about valve and actuator topics related to what they do at their plant. Those presenters were quick to praise the enthusiasm of those in attendance and the format of the program, which provided a more personalized approach.

VMA is now offering a limited number of customized "we come to you" programs to end-user, engineering and distribution companies, as well as continuing its full-scale basics program, coming next to Houston, Oct. 18-20. MORE

What’s in Store for Commercial Construction?

While low inflation and more optimism from business are making the commercial sector healthy, growing political bipolarization and uncertain funding for future projects are headwinds against robust future growth. Important trends to recognize in this sector include an emerging shift in the power structure between contractors and engineers, as well as an increasing shortage of skilled workers, according to VMA Market Forecast speaker Randy Giggard, FMI Consulting. MORE

Safety is Not about Rules and Regulations

The very nature of the oil and gas, power generation, water and wastewater industries means plants, mines, oil platforms and fields can be dangerous places. Yet accidents are not a given. Rather than think of safety as a cost, leaders must understand it is an investment with profound bottom-line results. MORE

Actuator Force and Direction Controls

It’s vital that the force actuators provide is enough to operate a valve effectively, but not be enough to cause harm to seats or valves. Understanding how to accomplish this begins with knowing the basics of what mechanisms there are to sense and control force and how different types are suitable for different situations.
