Deepa Malhotra, director of commercial operations for Emerson’s power and water solutions business, has been recognized with a STEP Ahead Award by The Manufacturing Institute, the workforce development and education partner of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM).

Malhotra is being honored alongside more than 100 women who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in their manufacturing careers. Winners represent all levels of the industry, from the factory floor to the C-suite.

Throughout her 16 years at Emerson, Malhotra has been responsible for marketing, sales and business strategies, project management and customer relations. Most recently, she led Emerson’s “perfect execution” strategy, helping the power and water business transform business operations to achieve revenue growth and improved productivity. She played a pivotal role in the global adoption of Emerson’s strategic initiatives and established a KPI framework that enhanced business operations.

Her approach to implementing the perfect execution strategy led to a cultural shift that has enabled the organization to think and act differently, reduce complexity, break down information silos and drive efficiency in the customer delivery cycle. Malhotra’s leadership and improvements to operational processes have resulted in a significant improvement in operating profit.

Malhotra understands that women and diversity are critical for an organization to succeed. She has mentored men and women throughout her career, including team members in her own department and others at Emerson. She serves as a role model to those who are looking to build a career in manufacturing, helping others discover their talents and realize their true potential. Always one to lead by example, she’s known to challenge coworkers to take risks and support them through challenges and successes.

“What excites me most is transforming ideas into reality,” Malhotra said. “I enjoy working with cross-functional teams to improve our organizational effectiveness and efficiency and to create and deliver products and solutions that reduce complexity and improve the lives of our employees, customers and beyond.”

She also volunteers with the STEM team at Emerson, whose mission is to empower women to achieve their full career potential. Malhotra was recently chosen to chair the Pennsylvania chapter for Asia Pacific Islander Alliance at Emerson. Through these networks, she shares ideas, fosters mentoring relationships and engages in social and learning opportunities with others.

“Fostering an environment that enables women to practice and refine their leadership skills is essential for developing workplace diversity and improved business performance,” she says.

Malhotra’s passion extends far beyond Emerson and into her community. Whether she is helping in her home state of Pennsylvania or is halfway around the world in her hometown in India, she’s committed to making a difference in the lives of women and children globally. Malhotra has served on the board of several nonprofit organizations including Wesley Family Services and the Indian Cultural Association of Pittsburgh. She’s also a co-founder of an organization called JHULA, which is dedicated to helping underprivileged women and children in India.

She holds an executive MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, a master’s degree in chemical engineering from Lamar University, and a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Warangal.

Emerson is a global technology, engineering and software company, with more than 83,000 employees and $16.8 billion in sales. Emerson has been ranked as the leading distributed control systems provider for the global power generation industry, according to Omdia.

The Manufacturing Institute’s diverse initiatives support all American workers, including women, veterans and students, through skills training programs, community building and the advancement of their careers in manufacturing. As the workforce development and education partner of NAM, The Manufacturing Institute mission is to grow and support the manufacturing industry’s skilled workers for the advancement of modern manufacturing.
