The Manufacturers Standardization Society (MSS) of the Valve and Fittings Industry announces that SP-149-2023, Preformed Elastomeric and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) V-Ring Packing Sets for Waterworks Valves, has been revised and published by MSS.
Standard Practice (SP)-149 has served the industry for over 27 years; establishing material, surface finish, dimensional and testing requirements for preformed V-ring packing sets, packing chambers and valve stems. This Standard Practice applies to homogeneous elastomeric and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) V-ring packing for gray iron and ductile iron quarter-turn and multiturn valves for waterworks applications with a maximum service temperature of 150°F (66°C). SP-149 continues to be maintained under the consensus of MSS Technical Committee 308, Packing & Gaskets. The revised Standard Practice, MSS SP-149-2023, is available from authorized U.S. and global distributors. It has been published in an electronic version (PDF) and in book format.

Valve Packing Sealing for Emissions Service
Methane (CH4) is the second-largest greenhouse gas emitted in the United States. In 2019, CH4 accounted for approximately 10% of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. Methane's lifetime in the atmosphere is much shorter than carbon dioxide (CO2), however, it is significantly more efficient at trapping radiation.
